Laryngitis

Laryngitis

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, or voice box, which can affect the quality of your voice. It may cause temporary hoarseness or voice loss and can occur due to infections, overuse of the voice, or irritation.

Common Symptoms

  • Hoarse or weak voice
  • Temporary loss of voice
  • Throat irritation or soreness
  • Dry or irritating cough
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Difficulty speaking comfortably

Common Causes

Laryngitis may be caused by viral infections, excessive voice use, allergies, acid reflux, smoking, or exposure to throat and airway irritants. Identifying the underlying cause helps determine appropriate care.

Diagnosis

An ENT specialist evaluates your symptoms and examines the throat and voice box. Video laryngoscopy may be recommended to get a detailed view of the larynx and vocal cords when required.

Treatment & Care

Treatment depends on the cause and may include voice rest, hydration, medications, reflux or allergy management, and avoiding irritants. Persistent voice changes should be evaluated to identify the underlying cause.
